  1. “Surviving the Peace” – Gallery exhibition: Sean Sutton, an award-winning photojournalist who works for MAG (Mines Advisory Group), will have a gallery exhibition of his photographs, to be open throughout the month of March. His exhibition, “Surviving the Peace,” provides a comprehensive look at conflict and recovery in post-conflict areas around the globe. He will give an audiovisual presentation of his work and the human stories behind the photographs at a gallery-opening reception. View Sean’s work here: http://tinyurl.com/b2gd3oe.

  1. “In the Dragon’s Teeth: Coming Home from War in Indochina” – Presentation from Dr. Larry Schwab:
  2. A professor of ophthalmology at West Virginia University, Dr. Schwab has done extensive work providing eye care throughout Africa. During the Vietnam War, Dr. Schwab served as a non-combatant medical officer. Over two decades later, he returned to the region where he was stationed. Join us, as he shares the story of "coming home" from war.   1. “Building Peace in a Turbulent World” – Keynote lecture from Dr. Richard Matthew: Dr. Matthew is the Director of Unconventional Security Studies at the University of California – Irvine. He has done extensive field work in Asia, specifically along the Pakistani-Afghani border where he evaluated deforestation’s effects on security and peace. He has also worked for the UN in Africa and Geneva, focusing on the environmental impact of the UN’s programs in post-conflict areas. 20 March “Legacies of War: History, Healing and Hope in Laos” – Multimedia presentation from Channapha Khamvongsa, Executive Director at Legacies of War: Legacies of War is a nonprofit based in DC, which  brings people together to create healing and transformation out of the wreckage of war. It focuses specifically on raising awareness about the long term effects of the Vietnam War era in Laos and advocates for U.S. support to clear the country of explosive remnants of war. 20 March Presentation from the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs (PM/WRA): The current Memorial Fellow from JMU, Lindsay Aldrich, MPA, who is working as an Assistant Program Manager for North Africa and the Near East, and a former Fellow, Emma Atkinson, who is now a WRA Program Coordinator for East Asia Pacific/Oceania, will speak about their work to JMU classes. Lindsay recently returned from a DOS trip to the Middle East; likewise, Emma has recently returned from Cambodia and Burma.
